A team of researchers from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), with significant contributions from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering & Technology (FKTK), has played a crucial role in a groundbreaking agricultural achievement—successfully producing Harumanis mangoes ahead of their usual season.
Through a research collaboration between UniMAP, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), and the Department of Agriculture, the iconic Perlis mango variety was harvested as early as January, compared to its traditional season from March to June.
This milestone was made possible by innovative agricultural techniques developed by UniMAP researchers, including microbial technology that enhances plant stability without heavy reliance on chemical treatments. This advancement ensures better flowering control, even during the rainy season, resulting in consistent yields and high-quality fruit.
Perlis Chief Minister Mohd Shukri Ramli highlighted the significance of this breakthrough for the state’s agricultural industry and farmers’ income. "We can now see that Harumanis mangoes are available as early as the end of January, with taste and quality comparable to those harvested during the regular season," he said at the launch event for the Harumanis season in Chuping.
Meanwhile, Koperasi Y.A Harumanis Perlis Chairman, Mohd Asri Yusof, revealed that this is the first time Harumanis mangoes have been successfully cultivated off-season, with approximately 10 metric tons produced in January. The cooperative, overseeing 192 farmers across 169.9 hectares in northern Perlis, aims for a total yield of 200 metric tons this year.
This research achievement underscores UniMAP's commitment to advancing sustainable agricultural practices and supporting local farmers through innovative solutions, with FKTK researchers playing a key role in the initiative.
